ABOUT THE ARTIST

Assemgul is a Kazakh artist and jeweller.

She studied fine arts. But art has always shaped her life through different forms of expression - including painting, sculpture, cinema, and music. Many of her projects are connected to Kazakh cultural identity and express deep respect for her roots.

She unexpectedly found herself in a jewellery workshop, where she became fascinated by traditional Kazakh craftsmanship, its style, and symbolism.

At first, it was simply curiosity and a desire to explore herself through a new material, without expectations or long-term plans.

Alongside painting and sculpture, she occasionally created jewellery for herself in her free time. The pieces she wore began attracting attention, and as interest in her work quickly grew, Assemgul began mastering a new profession - building her workshop and learning how to run her own business independently.

With a very small first collection, she presented her work at a local pop-up event. That moment became the beginning of a story she had never planned.

In many ways, this path chose her before she chose it herself.

Assemgul works entirely independently, without assistants or a production team.

Every stage of the process - from sketching, modelling, casting, stone setting, enamelling, and polishing to creative and art direction - is handled solely by her.

Maintaining this direct connection to her work remains an essential part of her artistic process. Through jewellery, she brings together traditional symbolism, contemporary forms, and personal artistic expression.

What began as a personal artistic exploration gradually evolved into a living brand with its own visual language, cultural memory, and connection between people and heritage.

ARTISTIC & CULTURAL LANGUAGE

The project draws inspiration from history, culture, and mythology – both Kazakh and ancient Turkic.

A strong influence comes from traditional West Kazakh jewellery, known for its monumental forms, massiveness, distinctive style, and symbolism.

In traditional Kazakh jewellery, ornaments were never purely decorative. Every pattern and element carried meaning — serving as protection, blessing, social status, and spiritual significance.

These ideas remain central to Assemgul’s artistic vision. Through jewellery, she explores historical symbols of protection, legends, rituals, traditional practices, and elements of warrior armour tied to cultural memory.

Silver remains the primary material in Assemgul’s work. Historically, it symbolizes purity, protection, and spiritual cleansing, holding a sacred place in nomadic culture and traditional craftsmanship.

While deeply rooted in culture and history, Yelai resonates with people far beyond Kazakhstan through themes of identity, protection, origin, memory, and the enduring human connection to one’s roots.
